Behr Paint Visualizer Alternative

A Different Way to Preview Paint: Your Photo, Any Color You Can Describe

Looking at the Behr paint visualizer or the ColorSmart app? Here is what they do, taken from public pages, and what we do differently: you upload your own photo and describe the color in words.

Free account required. New accounts get 2 free renders (watermarked) in most countries, then paid plans.

What the Behr Visualizer and App Do

We read the public pages listed under Sources below. This is what they say, in our words:

  • Behr has a Color Visualizer on its website where you can try Behr paint colors on a photo of your own room or on sample rooms. Behr's site blocked our automated tools, so we could not open that page ourselves; this description comes from how it is listed in search. Check behr.com for what it does today.
  • A Bob Vila roundup says the ColorSmart app previews Behr color combinations in room scenes and on exteriors, lets you upload a photo to color match a shade, and lets you scan the barcode on a Behr swatch to test that color.
  • A 2011 ProBuilder article about the first ColorSmart mobile app says it let you match a photo to a Behr color, browse the color catalog and save colors and room images. That is an old article, so the app has probably changed.
  • Hover, a separate company, offers its own tool for trying Behr colors on a photo of your house. Its page says every shade in that tool comes from Behr's official color collections.

We looked at these sources on 2026-10-15 and tool names and features may change, so check Behr's site for current details. We are not affiliated with Behr.

What We Do Differently

You describe the color in words

Type "muted slate blue", "soft sage" or "warm greige" and the AI draws its best version on your photo. You are not limited to a palette, but the result is an approximation, not a match to a particular brand's color.

It edits your own photo

You upload a photo of your house or room and the AI changes the part you name. There is no sample scene to pick first.

One sentence can change more than walls

Ask for only the cabinets, only the trim or only the garage door. See our cabinet, trim and garage door pages.

What it does not do

We do not hold a brand's color library, we cannot promise a paint match, and we do not sell paint or samples. If you need an exact Behr color, their tools and color cards are the right place. You can use ours to explore a look and theirs to pick the exact can. Also see our Sherwin-Williams visualizer page.

Colors Described in Words, Before and After

AI-generated sample edits. The before photos are AI-generated sample rooms and houses; the camera angle and light stay the same and the color changes. Each caption shows the sentence we typed and names anything else that changed.

Dining room with white walls, a wooden table with chairs, a black pendant light and a window, beforeBefore
The same dining room with the walls painted a muted sage greenAfter
Typed instruction: "a soft muted sage green, matte". The walls changed; the white baseboards, ceiling, window, table, chairs, pendant light and floor look the same. The room reads a little darker overall because the new wall color is darker than white.
Two-story house with tan vinyl siding, white trim and a white front door, a dark gray roof and a small lawn, beforeBefore
The same house with the siding painted a muted slate blueAfter
Typed instruction: "a muted slate blue" for the siding only. The siding changed, including the side wall; the white trim, white front door, roof, shrubs and driveway look the same. The lawn looks a little different in the after image (the grass is a slightly cooler green with a different mowing pattern), which we did not ask for. The sky is also a more saturated blue, which we did not ask for either.
Bathroom with white walls, a white vanity and sink, a framed mirror, a towel and gray tile, beforeBefore
The same bathroom with the walls painted a pale blue-grayAfter
Typed instruction: "a pale warm blue-gray, matte". The walls changed; the vanity, sink, mirror, towel, door and tile floor look the same. The result reads more blue-green than the warm gray we described, which shows why you should check a render against a real sample.

How to Try It on Your Own Home

  1. Take a clear photo. A straight-on photo in good light, with the walls or the surface you want to change fully in the frame.
  2. Open the paint tool in Custom mode. Upload the photo and describe the change: "Paint only the walls a soft muted sage green, matte. Keep the trim, furniture and floor the same." For the outside of a house, the exterior paint tool works the same way.
  3. Compare, then test a real sample. Render two or three options, then paint a sample from the brand you plan to buy and look at it in morning and evening light. A screen cannot replace that.

Behr Paint Visualizer Alternative FAQ

Is this the Behr paint visualizer?+

No. This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Behr, its owner or any retailer that sells Behr paint. Behr and ColorSmart are names that belong to their owners. This page describes how their tools work from public pages and describes a separate tool.

Can I use an exact Behr color here?+

You can type a color name or a description, but our render is an approximation, not a match to a specific Behr product color, and we do not promise a match to any brand's paint. If you need the exact Behr color, use their own tools or a physical color card, then compare it with our render as a rough preview.

How is it different from the Behr visualizer?+

Behr's tools are built around Behr's own color collection: you pick a Behr color and apply it to a sample room or to your photo. Ours works the other way around: you upload a photo and describe the change in words, so you can ask for a color that is not in anyone's palette, such as "a muted slate blue", and for changes beyond wall color, such as only the cabinets or only the trim.

Is it free?+

You need a free account to generate. New accounts in most countries get enough free credits for up to 2 renders, and free renders carry a small watermark. After that, paid plans on the pricing page give you more renders without the watermark. We have not listed the prices or limits of Behr's tools; check their pages for those.

Do I need to sign up?+

Yes. Rendering requires an account so your credits and results can be saved. You can sign in with Google or a one-time code sent to your email.

Will the render match the paint on the wall?+

No visualizer can promise that. Screens, camera white balance and room light change how a color reads, and the AI draws an approximation, as the bathroom example above shows. Paint a real sample, ideally on a large board, and look at it in morning and evening light before you buy a gallon.

What can it change besides wall color?+

Anything you can describe in a sentence. In Custom mode you can ask to repaint only the cabinets, only the trim, only the front door or the garage door, or only part of a wall. It is an AI edit, not a mask, so check the result for anything extra that changed, as the captions above point out.

What photo works best?+

A straight-on, well-lit photo of the room or the front of the house, with the surface you want to change fully in the frame. Soft daylight gives the most even result.
