Benjamin Moore Visualizer Alternative

A Different Way to Preview Paint: Your Photo, Any Color You Can Describe

Looking at the Benjamin Moore Color Portfolio app or the old Personal Color Viewer? Here is what the app does, taken from Benjamin Moore's own page, and what we do differently: you upload your own photo and describe the color in words.

Free account required. New accounts get 2 free renders (watermarked) in most countries, then paid plans.

What the Benjamin Moore Color Tools Do

We read the two pages listed under Sources below. This is what they say, in our words:

  • Benjamin Moore's Color Portfolio page describes a photo and video visualizer that lets you preview paint colors on different walls and surfaces, in inspiration rooms, or on photos of your own space.
  • The same page lists Color Capture, which uses your phone's camera to find equivalent Benjamin Moore colors for an object in view, plus a virtual fan deck and a color catalog you can browse by collection or color family.
  • ColorReader is a separate handheld device from Datacolor that pairs with the app, sold apart from it. Bob Vila's roundup says that with it you place the device on a flat surface to see the closest paint matches, and that the app can also visualize colors through your camera in real time.
  • The page carries this note: on-screen and printer color representations may vary from actual paint colors.
  • Many searches still use the older name Personal Color Viewer. We found no current official page under that name, so this page describes the Color Portfolio app instead.

We looked at these sources on 2026-10-15 and tool names and features may change, so check Benjamin Moore's site for current details. We are not affiliated with Benjamin Moore.

What We Do Differently

You describe the color in words

Type "deep forest green", "soft sage" or "warm greige" and the AI draws its best version on your photo. You are not limited to a palette, but the result is an approximation, not a match to a particular brand's color.

It edits your own photo

You upload a photo of your house or room and the AI changes the part you name. There is no sample scene to pick first.

One sentence can change more than walls

Ask for only the cabinets, only the trim or only the garage door. See our cabinet, trim and garage door pages.

What it does not do

We do not hold a brand's color library, we cannot promise a paint match, and we do not sell paint or samples. If you need an exact Benjamin Moore color, their app and color samples are the right place. You can use ours to explore a look and theirs to pick the exact can. Also see our Sherwin-Williams visualizer page.

Colors Described in Words, Before and After

AI-generated sample edits. The before photos are AI-generated sample rooms and houses; the camera angle and light stay the same and the color changes. Each caption shows the sentence we typed and names anything else that changed.

Living room with light gray walls, a beige sofa with two cushions, a wooden side table with a lamp and a rug, beforeBefore
The same living room with the wall behind the sofa painted deep navy blueAfter
Typed instruction: "only the wall behind the sofa, a deep navy blue, matte". The wall behind the sofa changed; the gray side wall, sofa, cushions, lamp, side table, rug and floor look the same. The navy wall is darker and flatter than a real painted wall would look in this light, and the corner where the two walls meet looks slightly bent.
Craftsman style house with cream siding, white trim, a covered porch with square columns, a gray roof and a lawn, beforeBefore
The same house with the siding painted deep forest green and the trim, porch columns and railing left whiteAfter
Typed instruction: "a deep forest green" for the siding only. The siding on the main house changed, including under the porch roof, but the siding on the small rear wing at the far right stayed cream; the white trim, porch columns, railing, front door, roof, chimney and shrubs look the same. The lawn and the sky look slightly brighter in the after image, which we did not ask for.
Small bedroom with pale yellow walls, a white crib, a wooden dresser, a window with white curtains and a light wood floor, beforeBefore
The same room with the walls painted a soft pale blue-grayAfter
Typed instruction: "a soft pale blue-gray, matte". The walls changed; the crib, dresser, curtains, window and baseboard look the same. The floor planks look slightly sharper and more detailed than in the before image, and the room looks cooler overall, which is expected with a cooler wall color.

How to Try It on Your Own Home

  1. Take a clear photo. A straight-on photo in good light, with the walls or the surface you want to change fully in the frame.
  2. Open the paint tool in Custom mode. Upload the photo and describe the change: "Paint only the wall behind the sofa a deep navy blue, matte. Keep the other walls, the sofa and the floor the same." For the outside of a house, the exterior paint tool works the same way.
  3. Compare, then test a real sample. Render two or three options, then paint a sample from the brand you plan to buy and look at it in morning and evening light. A screen cannot replace that.

Benjamin Moore Visualizer Alternative FAQ

Is this the Benjamin Moore color visualizer?+

No. This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Benjamin Moore. Benjamin Moore, Color Portfolio and ColorReader are names that belong to their owners. This page describes how their tools work from their own page and describes a separate tool.

Can I use an exact Benjamin Moore color here?+

You can type a color name or a description, but our render is an approximation, not a match to a specific Benjamin Moore color, and we do not promise a match to any brand's paint. If you need an exact Benjamin Moore color, use their own app or a physical color sample, then compare it with our render as a rough preview.

What happened to the Benjamin Moore Personal Color Viewer?+

Many searches still use the older name, Personal Color Viewer. We could not find a current official page under that name, and the tool Benjamin Moore's own color pages describe today is the Color Portfolio app. Names and features change, so check Benjamin Moore's site for the current tool.

How is it different from the Benjamin Moore app?+

From Benjamin Moore's own page, the Color Portfolio app is built around their color library: you browse the color catalog or the virtual fan deck and preview Benjamin Moore colors on walls and surfaces, inspiration rooms or photos of your own space. Ours works the other way around: you upload a photo and describe the change in words, so you can ask for a color that is not in anyone's palette, such as "a deep forest green", and for changes beyond wall color, such as only the cabinets or only the trim.

Is it free?+

You need a free account to generate. New accounts in most countries get enough free credits for up to 2 renders, and free renders carry a small watermark. After that, paid plans on the pricing page give you more renders without the watermark. We have not listed the prices or limits of Benjamin Moore's tools; check their page for those.

Do I need to sign up?+

Yes. Rendering requires an account so your credits and results can be saved. You can sign in with Google or a one-time code sent to your email.

Will the render match the paint on the wall?+

No visualizer can promise that. Benjamin Moore's own page says on-screen and printer color representations may vary from actual paint colors, and ours has the same limit: screens, camera white balance and room light change how a color reads. Paint a real sample and look at it in morning and evening light before you buy.

What can it change besides wall color?+

Anything you can describe in a sentence. In Custom mode you can ask to repaint only one wall, only the cabinets, only the trim, only the front door or the garage door. It is an AI edit, not a mask, so check the result for anything extra that changed, as the captions above point out.
