Try New Roof Colors on a Photo of Your Own House
Upload a photo of your house, describe the roof in a sentence, and see charcoal shingles, brown shingles or a green metal roof against your own siding, brick and trim before you choose.
Free account required. New accounts get 2 free renders (watermarked) in most countries, then paid plans.
Roofs Before and After
AI-generated sample edits. The before photos are AI-generated sample houses; the camera angle and light stay the same and the roof color changes. Each caption names anything else that changed. A render shows a color idea, not a real shingle or a roofing product.

AfterHow to Preview a New Roof Color on Your Own Photo
- Take a clear photo. Stand back far enough to get the whole house and the roofline in one frame, straight-on if you can, in daylight with the roof not hidden by trees. Parked cars and bins in the foreground do not matter much, but a roof cut off at the top is hard to edit.
- Open the paint tool in Custom mode. Upload the photo and describe the change in one sentence: “Change only the color of the roof shingles to dark charcoal gray. Keep the brick, siding, windows, garage door, gutters, lawn and sky exactly the same.” Say what must stay, because the AI sometimes recolors the gable siding, the trim or the porch roof along with the main roof.
- Compare two or three colors. Render charcoal, brown and one bolder option, download the results and look at them next to your siding and brick. Then ask a roofer for sample shingles and look at them against your house at different times of day.
Useful for homeowners comparing shingle colors, for sellers and for roofers who want to show a customer the idea first. To change the brick, shutters or garage door as well, try the brick paint visualizer, the shutter color visualizer or the garage door color visualizer.
Roof Color Ideas to Try
Charcoal and black
Dark gray and black roofs are a common match for gray, blue and white houses and for brick. IKO says charcoal or slate suits a gray or blue house, and Dale's Roofing says dark gray or black pairs well with blue or gray siding.
Brown
Brown shingles are a classic match for tan, cream and many brick houses. Dale's Roofing recommends brown shingles for tan or cream-colored houses, and IKO suggests dark brown or black shingles on a beige house.
Green and other metal colors
Metal roofs come in many colors, and Western States Metal Roofing notes that they can last 40 to 60 years or more, so the color is a long decision. Our green example is a dark forest green; ask a metal roofer for real color chips.
Light or dark
IKO and Dale's Roofing both say lighter roofs reflect sunlight and can help in a warm climate, while darker roofs absorb heat, which can help in a cold one. Dale's Roofing also says lighter colors tend to make a house look larger and darker ones smaller.
Before You Pick a Roof Color
- Look at what you are not changing. IKO says to check how the roof works with brick, stone and wood siding, and Fixr advises matching the siding to fixed elements such as brick, stone veneer and the roof, because those are costly to change.
- Think about climate. IKO and Dale's Roofing both describe lighter shingles as better at reflecting sunlight in a warm climate and darker shingles as holding more heat, which can suit a cold one. Ask a local roofer what applies where you live.
- Check any homeowners association rules first. Dale's Roofing notes that some HOAs restrict roof colors.
- Think about resale. Dale's Roofing notes that an unconventional color may affect resale value.
- Match the shingle style to the house. IKO says varied, textured architectural shingles can suit traditional homes and sleek, uniform ones can suit modern homes. A render cannot show shingle texture accurately.
- Look at real samples. IKO recommends viewing sample shingles against your house at different times of day, and Western States Metal Roofing says a color chip gives only a tiny representation of a large metal roof, which is why a full-roof preview helps. It says its samples are typically free, with a job minimum for homeowners.
- Colors differ by brand and region. Ask the roofer for the exact product name and check it in person; our render is an approximation, not a product match.
Roof advice here is drawn from IKO, Dale's Roofing and Western States Metal Roofing, and siding advice from Fixr. We checked IKO, Dale's Roofing and Western States Metal Roofing directly; Owens Corning's own pages did not load for us, so we do not quote their advice. Roofing steps are general advice, so follow your roofer's instructions.
Roof Color Visualizer FAQ
Is the roof color visualizer free?+
You need a free account to generate. New accounts in most countries get enough free credits for up to 2 renders, and free renders carry a small watermark. After that, paid plans on the pricing page give you more renders without the watermark.
Do I need to sign up?+
Yes. Rendering requires an account so your credits and results can be saved. You can sign in with Google or a one-time code sent to your email.
Is this different from a shingle maker's roof visualizer?+
Roofing brands such as Owens Corning and IKO publish visualizers where you upload a photo and try that brand's shingles. We are not affiliated with them. Ours is not tied to one product: you describe any roof color or material in words and get a quick preview. It is an approximation, so confirm the real product and color with your roofer.
Can it recolor only the roof and leave my siding and brick alone?+
That is the goal, and you get the best results when you say so, for example "change only the color of the roof shingles to charcoal gray, keep the brick, siding, trim, windows and garage door the same". It is an AI edit, not a mask, so check the result. In our own examples the roof color changed as asked, and some shutters, gravel and lawn texture were redrawn slightly; in an earlier try the siding in a small gable also changed color until we said to keep it.
Can it show a metal roof or a tile roof?+
You can ask for a standing seam metal look or a tile look in Custom mode, and our second example shows a green metal roof. The AI draws a plausible roof, not a specific product, so ask a roofer for real samples and for how the material suits your house.
Will it match a specific shingle color?+
You can type a color name or a description, but the render is an approximation, not a product match. Screens, camera white balance and sunlight all change how a color reads. Look at a real shingle sample against your house before you buy.
What photo works best?+
A straight-on photo in daylight with the whole roof in the frame and as little of it hidden by trees as possible. Heavy shade, night photos and photos that cut off the roofline make the roof harder for the AI to find.
